In this week’s Torah portion we read about the birth of eleven of Jacob’s children; Benjamin will come next week. Jacob’s sons become the fathers of the tribes (an honor not shared by his daughter Dina). The tradition states that of the twelve tribes, only Judah, Benjamin and half of the tribe of Levy (which did not have its own inherited land) remained, while the other tribes were lost following the conquest of the Land of Israel by the Assyrian empire (722 BCE). The question as to what became of the Ten Lost Tribes and where they went has fueled Jewish imagination over the generations.
