The flexibility of Umm al Hiran Residents vs the government’s intransigence

No Comments 05 February 2017

On January 18 2017, the Israeli government attempted to begin erasing the entire Bedouin Israeli village of Umm al Hiran in order to build a Jewish community on the rubble. The attempt had disastrous results for both Bedouin and Jews, of which the details are still unclear. Rabbis for Human Rights mourns these painful killings, wishes a speedy recovery to the injured, and calls for a commission to investigate fully the events of this morning. We also call on the government to seek a resolution that is just and acceptable to the residents of Umm al-Hiran regarding the future of their village.

Amona vs Umm al-Hiran: A Reality Check

No Comments 18 January 2017

On January 18 2017, the Israeli government attempted to begin erasing the entire Bedouin Israeli village of Umm al Hiran in order to build a Jewish community on the rubble. The attempt had disastrous results for both Arabs and Jews, of which the details are still unclear. Rabbis for Human Rights mourns these painful killings, wishes a speedy recovery to the injured, and calls for a commission to investigate fully the events of this morning. We also call on the government to seek a resolution that is just and acceptable to the residents of Umm al-Hiran regarding the future of their village.

Many have sought to draw a basis of comparison between the evacuation of Umm al Hiran to the evacuation of Amona, a Jewish Israeli outpost in the occupied territories. Is this comparison appropriate?

Renewed threat of demolition to Bedouin Umm al Hiran

No Comments 20 November 2016

Alarm at Bedouin village Umm al Hiran after authorities arrive this morning, Sunday November 20.

A large number of police and other enforcement authorities arrived this morning (November 20 2016) at Umm al Hiran in the Negev and left soon after. This raised alarm for residents concerned it signified preparation for a massive action in the village, which the state seeks to demolish and replace with a Jewish town to be called “Hiran.”

The following day, Monday the 21st, it was expected that the demolition of 15 homes in Umm al Hiran would occur the following morning of Tuesday, November 22nd and a call was made to activists to come to the village ASAP. However, the following morning no demolitions occurred. We believe this is a tactic by the authorities to exhaust the residents and activists of Umm al Hiran, making protest of the demolitions more difficult. Please continue to check-in regarding updates.

Call for volunteers: JNF working again on land at Al Arakib

No Comments 18 July 2016

JNF bulldozers arrived yesterday July 17th at the “unrecognised” Bedouin village of Al Arakib, which has been demolished 100 times. The plan is to forest over the village, and the bulldozers have started to prepare new land for planting despite the fact that the JNF said it would not continue to work in these areas until the issue was resolved in the courts or at the Knesset.

Please make every effort to go down to the village and stand in solidarity with the residents! Coordinate by calling Aziz at 050 770 1119.

The JNF tried to claim they are only cleaning already prepared land. That should have also remained frozen; however, this is entirely new land prep

Urgent call to join residents of Umm al Hiran Sunday morning

No Comments 09 July 2016

The Israeli Bedouin residents of Um El Hiran have issued an urgent and desperate call for anybody and everybody to come to Umm Al Hiran tomorrow at 7:00 am because they have been informed that the JNF bulldozers are going to start working on a security road right next to their homes. Up until now they have been working much further away. The police told Rabbi Ascherman on Friday that they will not be entering the village or demolishing homes for another few months, but the residents don’t trust that. If there isn’t a public outcry and determination to defend on the residents’ right to live where the government moved them in 1956 and promised them that they could rebuild their lives, very shortly the village simply will be wiped off the face of the earth.  Jewish “Hiran” will be built on the rubble of Umm Al Hiran.

Click here for more background on the threat over Umm al Hiran

Please call at anytime, and Rabbi Ascherman will try to arrange transportation: 050-560 7034. Depending on what happens, we may need people over the next few mornings.

The residents have also requested urgent appeals to President Rivlin. You can send them here.
