International Women’s Day: Supporting the right to an education for Bedouin girls

No Comments 08 March 2017

As we observe International Women’s Day today, Rabbis for Human Rights highlights the struggle to save the beloved ecological school at Khan al Akhmar, serving approximately 150 Jahalin Bedouin children living on the outskirts of Jerusalem. The school, currently slated for demolition due to Israel’s unjust planning policy, is the only viable formal educational option for the girls of the Khan al Akhmar community, and its destruction would signify a tremendous loss for the Jahalin women. “Jerusalem Bedouin – to the Garbage Dump!”

1 Comment 23 February 2017

By Deborah Greniman

“Several years ago, we took a short drive into Kfar Adumim, a pleasant bedroom suburb of Jerusalem, on the well-traveled road linking Jerusalem to Ma’ale Adumim, Jericho and the Dead Sea. In a bid to attract young families, a huge sign over the settlement’s entrance read “Education is our highest priority!” Indeed, Kfar Adumim has a beautiful school. ” Please click here to read the full blog posted on the Times of Israel Continue Reading

Thank you to all who donated to the Jahalin families whose homes were demolished!

No Comments 16 January 2017

Rabbis for Human Rights would like to thank all those who went to the trouble of donating sleeping bags, blankets and warm winter clothes to the ten Jahalin Bedouin families who lost their homes in the Judean Desert about two weeks ago in a cruel, heartless act of destruction by the Israeli army’s Civil Administration. In particular, we would like to thank our board member Rabbi Jeremy Milgrom who assisted in making this happen, delivering things to the needy families. All honour to you all, God bless you! The things were very appreciated but right now we need no more donations of this kind. (Donations of a financial kind are always welcome to support our work, of course.) Continue Reading

Demolition of Khan al Ahkmar Tire School Postponed

No Comments 28 August 2016

On Friday August 26, the Israeli government announced that the demolition of a school of mud and tires built at the Jahalin Bedouin community of Khan al Ahkmar would be postponed for now. This decision came after much local and international outcry against the destruction of the school. Despite any protestations from powerful settlers and settler groups, the school will continue to serve 170 Bedouin children from the impoverished and underprivileged areas around Kfar Adumim.

Jahalin children visit the sea!

No Comments 07 August 2016

Here are some photos from our trip to the sea last Monday (August 1 2016) with 53 Jahalin Bedouin kids and mothers from the Abu Nawahr encampment. The outing was organised with  the Comboni sisters, courtesy of Machsom Watch and with the assistance of eleven volunteers from Canadian “Operation Groundswell”. It was a truly international interfaith outing and a wonderful event, ending a successful season of summer camps for these otherwise very deprived children.
