General, Occupied Territories
Last night (23.1) around midnight in Anata security forces destroyed for the fifth time the Shawamreh family’s home, “Beit Arabiyah” (That had been used as a peace center and had become the international symbol of the struggle against home demolitions based on political and discriminatory planning.), tin shacks of the Jahalin Bedouin which were home to some 20 men, women and children, and came back at 4:30 am to demolish an additional home rebuilt by the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions (ICAHD) last summer.
The history of demolitions
RHR has a long history with the Shawamreh family since the first demolition in July 2008, the rebuilding on the three days leading up to Tisha B’Av, the redemolition the day after Tisha B’Av, and the press coverage that broke the issue in Israel and internationally. RHR was a founding member of ICAHD, which at the time was a coalition, not a separate NGO.
Rabbi Ben Hollander z”l used to say that experiencing the first demolition was the most difficult day of his life, and helping to rebuild the home was one of the best days of his life. The worried daughters of Rabbi Max Warschawski z”l tried to get him to move as bullets flew around him that day. He refused, saying, “This is where I need to be.”
Rabbi Ascherman was present during the demolitions, and will send pictures and an account later.
Today, we know where we need to be. Volunteers are already out there today, and we will organize transportation as needed to join them during the day. Please call the office -02-6482757, Rabbi Ascherman -050-5607034 or Michael (ICAHD) 050-7750754.
