RHR sends letter to defense minister protesting recent wave of home demolitions

No Comments 26 August 2015

The wave of Palestinian house demolitions in the West Bank indicates a failure of the new planning outline in Area C and the pursuit of demolitions instead

On Sunday Aug 23, 2015, Rabbis for Human Rights sent a letter to the Minister of Defense warning against the widespread wave of Palestinian home demolitions in Area C, which is contrary to the defense establishment’s statements that it allows and is even improving Palestinian development in Area C. The organization, which fought for planning rights for Palestinians, asserts that while the State continues to refuse to make the necessary changes in the planning system, it has stepped up its demolition activity.

WATCH: State department strongly urges Israel to refrain from Susya demolitions

1 Comment 17 July 2015

State Department Spokesperson says yesterday that they are closely watching the events in Susya, “strongly urges” Israel to refrain from demolishishing homes, and says that demolitions or evictions would be “harmful and provocotive,” with implicatons beyond Susya itself.

 Full text:

QUESTION: Do you have a reaction to reports that Israel may demolish part of a village called Susiya in the West Bank for expanding settlements?

MR KIRBY: I do. We’re closely following developments in the village of Susiya in the West Bank, and we strongly urge the Israeli authorities to refrain from carrying out any demolitions in the village. Demolition of this Palestinian village or of parts of it, and evictions of Palestinians from their homes would be harmful and provocative. Such actions have an impact beyond those individuals and families who are evicted. We are concerned that the demolition of this village may worsen the atmosphere for a peaceful resolution and would set a damaging standard for displacement and land confiscation, particularly given settlement-related activity in the area. We urge Israeli authorities to work with the residents of the village to finalize a plan for the village that addresses the residents’ humanitarian needs

RHR legal team sends urgent letter to Civil Department urging a halting of demolitions after receiving lists of structures slated for demolishment

Now is the time to act: State informs Susya demolitions to occur between July 20 – August 3 – Here’s how you can help!
