On Thursday, May 11 2017 an event opening a campaign to help the El Bustan centre of the Jabal Al Jahalin next to Azaria become independent was held at the Willy Brandt Centre in Abu Tor.

Organised by Arielle Wisbaum of Achvat Amim (pictured above) and sponsored by RHR,  the campaign aims to construct a new building in which to hold the current afternoon activities for Bedouin girls (today, with RHR financial support, some forty girls participate regularly, and a hundred every summer) . The vision presented by the director of the centre, Ibtisam El Hirsch (pictured below) , is to create a space for women and girls’ extracurricular education beyond the very limited possibilities existing now in this displaced Jahalin community. Between twenty and thirty supporters, mainly young people, came. Ibtisam spoke well. Angela Godfrey-Goldstein (of Jahalin Solidarity) introduced her short film “High Hopes”, telling the story of forced displacement from the area on which the settlement of Maale Adumim was built. RHR has been supporting this community since the 1990s.

Rabbi Yehiel Grenimann  said a few words on behalf of Rabbis for Human Rights,  praising the courage and determination of these Bedouin women and the Achvat Amim volunteers who have been helping them, and people did buy the jewelery and hand made handbags (in the photo ) so some money was raised. The crowdfunding campaign is also off to a good start.  Already pledges of more than a thousand dollars have been received. Please support this by sharing the link with friends and donating yourselves.  And consider visiting and/or volunteering as well! Contact Rabbi Grenimann regarding possibilities to do so at [email protected]
