Justice in Israel-Negev Bedouin

Sunday: Solidarity protest with threatened Israeli Bedouin village Umm al Hiran

3 Comments 28 January 2016

The Bedouin residents of Um Al-Hiran have asked that we join them and leaders of the Israeli Arab Community in an afternoon of solidarity and protest.  Earlier this month, the Israeli High Court refused to rehear Um Al-Hiran and Atir’s petition against plans to expell the villagers from the lands the government moved them to in 1956. In August, JNF bulldozers began preparing the first stage of transforming Bedouin Um Al Hiran into Jewish Hiran.

On January 17th, the High Court rejected Adallah’s request on behalf of “unrecognised” Bedouin villages Um al Hiran and Atir that it rehear their petition against expulsion orders for the villages. The court has therefore given the green light to the State to go ahead and demolish these villages, building the new Jewish town of Hiran on the ruins of the Bedouin village Um al Hiran, and foresting over Atir with trees from the nearby Yatir Forest. The residents – all citizens of Israel – will be forcibly relocated to the already overcrowded Bedouin township of Hura. This decision comes despite the fact that, subsequent to the original decision, the court has finally acknowledged that residents of Um el Hiran are in their current location because such is where the government moved them after their previous displacement from their ancestral lands near Wadi Zubaleh.

In addition to attending the protest, please send a letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu and President Rivlin requesting they stop the demolitions. Click here to send a letter.

If you would like to attend the protest, be in touch with either our office at 02 648 2757, Rabbi Ascherman at 050 560 7034 or Yaacov Manor at 050 573 3276. If there are enough people, we will try to organise transportation and/or match people in carpools.
